Dear PinkSlipMixer Members,
With companies downsizing to adjust to their shrinking budgets and the national unemployment rate at 9.7 percent, job security is a thing of the past. That's why many individuals are taking control of their destinies and investing in a business with a proven model - especially the baby boomer population.
Americans between the ages of 55 and 64 had a higher rate of entrepreneurial activity than those aged 20 to 34 every year from 1996 to 2007, according to a 2009 report by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.

What holds us back?
Who will I become? Where will I be ten years from now? These are typical questions that everyone asks themselves throughout their lifetime. The average person will change jobs every four years, resulting in a switch seven to 10 times over their lifetime.
Yet as individuals grow older and technologies advance, it becomes more difficult to switch career paths or find an alternate job. Furthermore, individuals who have been laid off are apprehensive about re-entering the workplace due to unstable work environments and decreased salaries.

Who has had success?
Scott and Naomie Forney worked in corporate America for more than 35 years. Over time, however, the couple's loyalty towards their employers diminished as they witnessed firsthand the inefficiency and untrustworthiness of these companies. Scott, for example, was laid off three times in just three years and as a result, he and Naomie were ready to chart a new course and use their talents to grow a business of their own.
Nevertheless, they needed guidance. As older individuals preparing for their retirement years, they wanted to ensure that they put their savings towards a business with a proven track-record, but also one that would suit their lifestyle. The Forneys trusted their MatchPoint consultant as he investigated their business characteristics and pointed them in the right direction. Today, the Forneys are successful franchisees working towards a happy retirement.

In his words: "After 36 years in corporate America and three lay-offs in three years, Naomie and I decided it was best to work for ourselves. Not knowing what exactly we would do, we enlisted the help of MatchPoint. Although the number of franchises to pick from was overwhelming, the MatchPoint process was incredible. Their methods produced a fit that will benefit us for years to come and possibly even our children. Their approach was truly painless and not at all intimidating. We will be eternally indebted to MatchPoint and truly appreciate their guidance and continued support."

Ask the expert: Why should I invest in a business instead of finding a new job? Investing in a franchise is a great way to create wealth and build equity. As an aging society, the older population is now more active and has the desire and need to generate additional retirement income due to economic factors. But not only are more seniors investing in franchises; franchisors are actively recruiting the baby boomer population as well. Older franchisees tend to have a great work ethic; they are dependable and have a knowledge base of life and business experience. Additionally, the older generation approaches and handles risk well in that they will thoroughly investigate the franchise and business opportunities at hand.
There's never been a better time to satisfy your personal and financial goals. In previous economic slumps, franchising has rebounded faster than other industries. After the recession of 2001, for example, franchise companies added 1.2 million jobs over a five-year period, and grew at an average of 9 percent a year, according to the International Franchising Association. And 2010 looks to be just as promising. Is not controlling your future more secure than waiting for someone else to determine your fate?
